Reg Mu Sung is President of the Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery Society and will speak on the cemetery's history.
The site itself is situated on a significant high point in the region. It was known as “Yababung” - meaning music and knowledge in the Gai-mariagal language.
It was dedicated as a cemetery in 1868 and it is the oldest general cemetery on the North Shore. It was closed for burials in 1974 and is now a heritage listed cemetery containing 15,000 burials, including many Lane Cove identities such as Jeremiah Roberts, the first mayor, Maria Green of Greenwich House, William Tunks and World War I servicemen as well as priests from Riverview College.
Reg is a retired librarian who has lived in Greenwich for forty years. Some years ago, he researched and wrote a history of Greenwich, using the extensive resources held in the Lane Cove library. This work is held in the library.
